Research Overview

My research sits at the intersection of technology management, innovation policy, and sustainability transitions — with a particular focus on how individuals, firms, and governments navigate the adoption of emerging technologies in developing economy contexts. Over more than a decade at SBM-ITB, I have built a body of work spanning electric and autonomous vehicle adoption, digital transformation in banking and industry, open innovation in digital startups, and the governance of decentralised energy systems.

A recurring thread across my research is the question of co-evolution: how technologies, institutions, and user behaviours change each other over time — and what that means for policymakers trying to orchestrate transitions rather than simply regulate outcomes. My current research agenda extends this into agent-based modelling of EV and microgrid co-diffusion in Indonesia, a collaboration with the University of Twente and an open invitation for partners.

⚡ EV & Energy Transition 🔋 Microgrids 🤖 Agent-based Modelling 🇮🇩 Indonesia Open to Collaboration
Co-Evolution of Electric Vehicles and Microgrids
An Agent-Based Modelling Framework for Sustainability Transition Orchestration in Indonesia

Indonesia faces two pressing transitions simultaneously: scaling electric vehicle (EV) adoption to decarbonise transport, and expanding microgrid deployment to reach the ~25 million citizens without reliable electricity. These two challenges are not independent — they are structurally coupled. EV adoption creates anchor demand that can make microgrids financially viable; microgrid deployment reduces range anxiety that constrains EV adoption. Yet policy and research have treated them as entirely separate problems. This research aims to change that.

🔄 The Viability Loop

EV adoption → microgrid load viability → developer investment → charging reliability → more EV adoption. When activated, this reinforcing loop drives the transition forward.

⚖️ The Tariff Squeeze

EV load growth → PLN grid stress → tariff increase → adoption slows — unless microgrid deployment breaks the cycle by enabling households to bypass grid load increases.

📍 The Spatial Mismatch

Demand-side EV subsidies without microgrid support concentrate adoption in high-income urban areas — widening the energy access gap between cities and peri-urban/rural communities.

The Approach

A spatially-explicit Agent-Based Model (ABM) built in Mesa/Python, simulating five interacting agent types — households, microgrid developers, EV infrastructure investors, government layers, and PLN — calibrated to Indonesian empirical data from surveys, PLN regional statistics, and field interviews across three regions.

The Theoretical Contribution

The research introduces Transition Orchestration Capacity (TOC) — the institutional capability to sequence, target, and coordinate policy interventions across co-evolving technology systems under budget constraint and institutional lag. TOC extends the Multi-Level Perspective toward multi-technology emerging economy contexts.

Negara-negara maju sering menasihati negara berkembang agar mempercayai pasar bebas. Namun, seperti diungkap Ha-Joon Chang, nasihat itu menyembunyikan paradoks besar: justru proteksionisme dan kebijakan industri yang membuat mereka maju — sebuah fenomena yang disebutnya kicking the ladder.
